RIP Bruce Swedien.

I’ve always wondered when this pundit would eventually leave her party.
Sean Connery has died.
Whitney Houston’s 1993 #1 rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” joins an exclusive club.
I am so freakin’ happy about this.
America’s leading source of progressive politics and culture, today announced the launch of “System Check” a new 10-episode podcast uncovering the harmful systems operating under the hood of US democracy. Bridging from Election Day to Inauguration Day, cohosts Melissa Harris-Perry and Dorian Warren will bring common sense to political commentary, turn down the frenzy and tune into the leaders and change makers doing the work of fighting for a more radical, just, and equitable future.
They will make sense of the systems undergirding and undermining our democratic institutions—and identify their promise and potential for political change. Listen to the trailer here.
I blissfully recall her old weekend MSNBC show and how it has influenced progressive punditry which followed in its wake. Here’s hoping there’s more of that in her future, as well.
Adele? Rihanna? What’s the status?
We all know that 2020 hasn’t been the best year (I’m putting it mildly because this is a family-friendly newsletter). And we could really use a pick-me-up. Music soothes the savage beast, and this year has been the very definition of savage. So it would be great if we could get albums from some artists we, ahem, have been waiting on.
Say it isn’t so! The lead singer of The Oufield — one of my favorite 80s guilty pleasures — has passed away.
Though the song — a top five R&B and pop smash from 1980 — has always been a gay anthem since hitting dancefloors, “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross was not conceived as such, according to the diva legend.
SiriusXM to debut its all-Prince channel tomorrow. Heck yeah!
Posty may not have the current #1 track in the country this week, but he breaks his own Top Ten longevity record with my second fave track of his, “Circles”, behind the song that he should be officially releasing as a single, “Saint Tropez”. The following encapsulates the staying power of his most recent #1:
“For me, the staying power of ‘Circles’ is due to a combination of an absolutely addicting, fun, emotional, and at the same time, non-fatiguing hook, combined with relatable lyrics,” R Dub, XHTZ (Z90) San Diego director of programming, recently told Billboard. “Who can’t relate to going in circles in so many aspects of life? Young, old, rich, poor, black, white … we’re all going through it.
True dat!
Minnesota is having a hard time grappling with the frustrations regarding its senior senator, Amy Klobuchar, as she presses on toward Nevada and South Carolina while launching a new Super Tuesday ad buy with recently raised funds after her penultimate debate preformance thus far. Deemed a “loser” among most media outlets with respect to her most recent debate performance last night, Klobuchar and her handling of her campaign profile haven’t been helped by the fact that she (or her handlers) couldn’t deflect open pockets of scrutiny ripe for the picking or that her campaign couldn’t foresee increasing spats with the Buttigieg campaign, which also came to a head last night.
I’m from MN, and though I’m quite pleased with her centrism and the style of bipartisanship it has fostered throughout her terms as a U.S. senator, I just can’t see a viable path for her to the nomination, even in a brokered convention.
The pop-rap wunderkind opens up to Billboard about life post “OTR”, and being ready to move on without regrets.
Ask Lil Nas X if he feels any pressure following up the record-breaking “Old Town Road,” and you’ll get a simple answer: No. “I’m not worried about anything,” he says over lunch a few days after the VMAs. Sure, “Old Town Road” has created an identity for him, but he’ll create others. “As an artist building myself up, I’m going to have to continue to make other moments,” he says. “But it’s not something that I’m upset about or anything. I mean, maybe when I’m out in public and someone asks for a picture and they’re like, ‘Where is your hat?’ ”
Fascinating? Or, sickening?
Jeffrey Epstein, inmate 76318-054, hated his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. It was cramped, dank and infested with vermin, so Mr. Epstein, long accustomed to using his wealth to play by his own rules, devised a way out. He paid numerous lawyers to visit the jail for as many as 12 hours a day, giving him the right to see them in a private meeting room.
Mr. Epstein was there for so long that he often appeared bored, sitting in silence with his lawyers, according to people who saw the meetings. While they were there, he and his entourage regularly emptied the two vending machines of drinks and snacks.”
Outside the meeting room, Mr. Epstein mounted a strategy to avoid being preyed upon by other inmates: He deposited money in their commissary accounts.
But in his final days, Mr. Epstein’s efforts to lessen the misery of incarceration seemed to be faltering. He was seldom bathing, his hair and beard were unkempt and he was sleeping on the floor of his cell instead of on his bunk bed, according to people at the jail.
