Say what you want about all of the machinations and meanderings which have brought this country to where it is now with respect to all things healthcare reform; there’s no denying one major fact: the GOP has done a masterful job in characterizing Obama’s signature domestic push for greater government involvement at the expense of an already fiscally strained national budget. Many entitlements, the party says, would be at risk — along with all seniors who call Medicare their insurance of choice.
During the latter stages of the entire reform debate, the once easily placable over-65 demographic became more concerned and even outright antagonistic over any promises Obama made to them with respect to the plan’s costs — including multiple reassurances that Medicare’s solvency would not be harmed in any way. Cue the GOP stand-ins (the entire Republican contingent of Congress) as sudden staunch defenders of the government plan.
This sentiment, among many others[], will be at the forefront of Obama’s thoughts today as he brings his feelgood-about-reform tour to the state of Maine today.
