The pneumococcal vaccine, available for a few years now in the U.S. as part of a stringent preventive medical protocol, is now extending its reach in the prevention of the most common strains of bacterial pneumonia worldwide. The pharma companies Pfizer and GSK, in a deal announced yesterday, will supply doses of their branded vaccine to developing nations at reduced cost.

Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline will provide up to 300 million doses each of their vaccines over a 10-year period. The price for the first 20 percent of the supply will be $7 a dose. Then the price will drop to $3.50 a dose for the remainder.

The program is expected to last for about 10 years and could herald the similar development of other vaccines built upon a global mass distribution model. | LINK
