Democrats have just announced that a “broad agreement” has been reached among their caucus in the reform debate, and it will not thrill progressives (or virtually any pro-Obama voter from Election Night ’08, for that matter) one little bit.
Democratic senators say they have a tentative deal to drop a government-run insurance option from health care legislation. No further details were immediately available.
What will Democrats — who call themselves progressive — get from jettisoning the public option?
But liberals and moderates have been discussing an alternative, including a private insurance arrangement to be supervised by the federal agency that oversees the system through which lawmakers purchase coverage.
An “option” administered by private Insurance, without government funding, and no essential government-funded competitive entity. For those “progressive” Democrats, a sell-out. For the majority of Senate Democrat healthcare “insiders”, a big victory! | LINK
