Is it the experience with already established government programs (like Medicare)? Is it the familiarity with bureacracy that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside? Or is it the desire to fulfill the oath of Hippocrates we took upon graduation from medical school? Regardless of what one may think of these questions and how they relate to the results of this poll, it appears that a substantial majority of physicians support a public option (me, included).
Most doctors — 63 percent — say they favor giving patients a choice that would include both public and private insurance. That’s the position of President Obama and of many congressional Democrats. In addition, another 10 percent of doctors say they favor a public option only; they’d like to see a single-payer health care system. Together, the two groups add up to 73 percent.
Most doctors want to reform the system and believe it can be done while preserving the spirit of payer competition and patient choice. Will it become reality, Mr. Obama? | LINK
