Tort reform in medicine got some press during George W. Bush’s term in the White House, but fresh debate on the topic of healthcare reform of late has brought a renewed energy to combat the issue definitively. Since the Republicans are earnestly trying to give credence to their dislike of Barack Obama’s upheld message of reform on his terms, any imprimatur or credit for a plausible alternative justifies the GOP’s search for meaning in this debate.

Although Obama has expressed compromise on this issue that has usually divided congressional leaders, trial lawyers and lobbyists for health organizations are wasting no time in negotiating changes that are sure to come regarding tort legislation. For the greater part, doctors appear open to alternatives — since the debate frames any change in lesiglation as a potential to effect cost savings in healthcare.

Trial lawyers, unsurprisingly, want their plaintiff clients to have their day in court and hope that any debate on this issue shifts from healthcare costs to patient safety. Chalk up another also-ran issue that is now getting play in the debate on health reform. | LINK
