A day after the president’s term-defining address on healthcare, the punditry is flowing fast and furiously. Overall, response by the public has been positive, by about a 3 to 1 margin. President Obama is undoubtedly one of the most significant Democratic orators of the past 50 years, so it is no surprise that his words and rhetoric (particularly on the issue of health reform) ring so emotionally and stirringly.
Unfortunately, the ultimate legislation on the matter will probably contain only a modicum of improvements in the overall gestalt of the healthcare reform momvement. And that’s a start. If anything, Obama morally took the high road in his call for reform, and he did it in such a way to stake his claim — ensuring an association that he took so much time to craft during his presidential bid.
Obama’s goal now is to translate that energy into optimism — not only for his party (as he achieved that last night with out-of-this-world approval ratings) but for those who are convinced that what he calls “his plan” will mean the end of freedom as we know it in this country. Such a ridiculously fantastic assertion about a nation which technologically reigns supreme with the promise and realization of medical advancement wouldn’t at all benefit from even the most trivial consideration or discussion.
However, in the uphill fight to save political face on an issue with which his opponents have used every conceivable method to belittle and demonize him, Obama recognizes the necessity to treat the true believers in such extremist doctrine with the same passion as he did with his political base that got him to the highest office in the land to begin with.
