Massachusetts has certainly made a name for itself in the decade of the ’00s as being a bellwhether of social change. One look at the five other states since 2003 to join in its leadership on the issuance of marriage licenses to gay couples confirms this fact. On the issue of universal healthcare mandates, the road has been a little less certain — in spite of enforcement.
Throw another wrench into its stewardship on universal care access: its private family health insurance premiums are among the highest in the country, skyrocketing in cost to over 40 per cent since 2004. The news serves as another warning to President Obama’s change-now-save-later rhetoric as it applies to healthcare financing. Almost six years on, that state’s HMOs and leading insurance plans are taking measures to rein in costs so that the ultimate social cost sharing to subsidize mandated coverage for all of Massachusetts citizens continues to be affordable. | LINK
