A Twin Cities healthcare system is working with one of Minnesota’s largest payers and trying its own brand of reform from within. Of the myriad topics in the public discourse over heatlhcare reform, the public option issue is the issue getting the most lip service, and for good reason — it remains a conduit for coverage for many uninsured. But its affordability has touched off a firestorm, which has recently culminated in Sen. Harry Reid’s postponing any action on reconciliation with the House on the reform bill until after the August recess.

Fairview Health Services isn’t waiting; they’re piloting their own brand of reform on a micro-level. By partnering with Medica and using a captitation system based upon prior treatment trends, both parties seek to promote efficiency and decrease waste by cutting extraneous testing and overhead. They’ve dubbed their model “private market reform”. | LINK
