Healthcare Leaders Follow Obama Lead in Calling for Medicare Payment Reform
Is this what is called disruptive innovation, as it applies to the way Medicare is run? As the debate on healthcare reform ramps up in the legislature, a group of healthcare organization CEOs have called for the end to fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare — on the grounds of limiting the waste that is so prevalent in the government program. The CEOs, mostly from Colorado and California systems, have drafted their concerns in a white paper [PDF]. This should be welcome news by President Obama, who lectures the AMA tomorrow on the issue of healthcare reform. (That organization has pre-emptively weighed in on his remarks to be made.) In addition to the repeal of FFS delivery, the healthcare leaders are lauding the use of healthcare exchanges as a mechanism for increasing healthcare choice. They hope that the perfect storm of bundled Medicare reimbursements that reward quality over quantity, allow for greater healthcare access via choice in the marketplace, and establish payments based on patient outcomes versus procedure-heavy wastefulness will be heard on Capitol Hill as debate begins on reform. | LINK
