Researchers are apparently “this close” to finalizing a rapid (less than 3 minutes) prostate biomarker screen. Throughout much of this decade the development of organic biomarkers to stage disease and stratify risk has become an important part of medical research, particularly that research conducted via nanotechnology.
Designed to ultimately replace comparably less efficient methods of testing for the same results (in this case, prostatic fluid anion determination as a surrogate marker for tumor growth), the test’s major drawback is that it is invasive. The physician has to use a needle aspirate to directly obtain the fluid from the prostate.
Sounds promising, but needs to be tested across a wide population to establish utility — something that may be a tough sell to patients who will always need this test followed by an even more confirmatory invasive procedure, the biopsy. | LINK
