Did Barack Obama have this healthcare tidbit in mind when he was making rounds on the campaign trail trumpeting healthcare savings? The chief strategic officer for the Alzheimer Assn. (yes, they have one) says that out-of-pocket healthcare costs for afflicted patients and their caregivers will triple in the coming decade. This news is buttressed by the fact that many states will see rate increases in the numbers of patients diagnosed over the next 10 years by greater than 75%.

Although sobering, this news is hardly surprising. Disease-oriented healthcare lobbying organizations are fighting to be heard in a healthcare economy doing everything to cut costs and trim waste, including funding for more research and (pharma) development. The unfortunate statement about chronic disease lobbying groups, including the Alzeimer’s Association, is that many of them will have to decide between channeling their passions for research and treatment in the face of rough times in the healthcare economy and maintaining their bottom line.  | LINK
