What’s a little knowledge, huh? A Minneapolis StarTribune article discusses the use of for-profit private lab testing agencies by churches for their congregants and others. Detractors say that services, mostly in the form of screening tests — such as those for diabetes and cholesterol, for example — may be causing more anxiety for patients than good. This is an old argument. If this is the main concern by some healthcare providers, then we might as well take away all of Pharma’s direct-to-consumer television and internet advertising. We can’t have empowered patients making decisions on their own, now can we?
Most healthcare interest groups realize that the problem with the delivery of care is not with operations like these little laboratory companies whose place in the larger scheme of things is pretty insignificant. Quite the contrary; the major source of anxiety is shared by providers, legitimate healthcare organizations, and patients alike: setting healthcare policy in this new Obama administration which guarantees sound healthcare delivery and accessibility. After all, it’s not the information that the patients have that is a danger to their health; it’s the inability in obtaining access to a proper healthcare provider to discuss those results and receive covered treatment. Let’s give patients as consumers some credit in taking charge of their best healthcare interests. | LINK
