Today at Barack Obama’s swearing in, no sooner will his hand leave the bible that the first of many rejections of the Bush administration’s doctrines will be implemented. Many of these will be in the realm of healthcare delivery and coverage of the uninsured. (1) Repeal of the so-called “conscience” legislation (which protects healthcare workers who oppose certain procedures on moral grounds), (2) of the rejection of SCHIP legislation, and (3) of heavy prerequisite conditions on families who would otherwise generally qualify for Medicaid — will lead off Obama’s sworn commitment to cover the uninsured. Although expansive, the move is seen by many critics as a safe one — coverage of kids is a nearly ubiquitously supportive stance across partisan political factions. Indeed, President Obama’s healthcare financing challenges will surely come in the months ahead, just as he begins to deal with an ailing economy and two wars. | LINK
