In what is being hailed as the first real step toward healthcare reform in the Obama administration, the House yesterday passed the expansion of SCHIP, the program which serves children of the working poor. The bill’s passage had the support of 40 congressional Republicans and is expected to expand coverage to 4 million more low-income children and maintain coverage for 7 million now enrolled. Price tag? Some $8 billion/year each of the next four years. This is a good place for the administration of the incoming president to start, as far as reform goes. Most people can agree that ensuring healthcare delivery to children, in all cases, is an investment in the future health and well-being of this country. That’s always a good thing. | LINK
